THE HOME-ED CONVERSATION

More Info

This liaison and advocacy work grows out of that lived experience.
I engage in dialogue with the Local Authority in a personal capacity because I care about the space between families and systems — the place where misunderstandings can take root, but also where clarity, mutual respect, and better conversations can grow.
Elective Home Education is diverse. Families make lawful and thoughtful choices about whether, how, and to what extent they engage with their Local Authority. I do not represent all home-educating families, nor do I promote a particular model of engagement. This work sits alongside the wide range of approaches that families take.
Its focus is simple:
-
Encouraging respectful, thoughtful conversation around EHE
-
Supporting accuracy and clarity when EHE is discusse
-
Maintaining appropriate boundaries — between information and obligation, dialogue and duty
-
Ensuring that real home-educating voices are present in conversations that affect them

I do not share personal or identifying information about families, and I do not become involved in individual situations unless explicitly invited. Engagement is always voluntary.
Alongside this, I am committed to strengthening connection between small alternative providers working in the “in-between” spaces where EHE, EOTAS, and Alternative Provision can sometimes feel blurred or confusing. Many small providers are navigating complex conversations with Local Authorities while remaining deeply child-centred and ethically grounded. I believe we are stronger — and clearer — when we support one another.
This work is not about campaigning or confrontation. It is about steadiness, clarity, and ensuring that when Elective Home Education is discussed, it is approached with care and accuracy.

Professional Background
Alongside 24 years as a home-educating parent and grandparent, I bring both academic and practical experience to this work.
I hold a BA Law with Education Studies and am a Director of the Home Education Legal Project. I am also a Trustee of the Joy Baker Fund and a panel member for the EHE Fund for Religion & Worldviews at Culham St Gabriel’s Trust, where I was involved in the co-creation of the fund.
In addition, I am a co-founder and partner at Time & Space Learning, working directly within the small alternative provision landscape that often intersects with Elective Home Education.
